When I met my husband 13+ years ago, he had a ton of books, including lots of Stephen King and other mysteries and thrillers, mostly paperback. Apparently he used to read a lot! But over the years I have known him he hasn’t read books too often, and more recently (like since I started this blog) he doesn’t seem to understand why I’m SO into reading. So I made it my goal to find books that would get him excited about reading again.

I succeeded by putting these three books in his hands:

The 3 books that worked and how I found them

This first book was recently a movie, but I heard about it from the girl sitting next to me at the hair salon several months ago; she was reading it and telling her stylist about it, specifically that it had so many references to the 80s. So I bought it for my husband’s upcoming birthday. He loved it.

Ready Player One: A Novel

After that first success, I felt the pressure was on to find something he’d like just as much. As a Little Free Library steward myself, I often peruse the other libraries I go by. If I see something interesting I will take it and then put it in my own library when I (or in this case my husband) is finished with it. I thought this next book looked like something he would like and I was right! (I actually didn’t realize it was young adult fiction until now but whatever I’m not going to tell him!!).

The Maze Runner (The Maze Runner, Book 1)

Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze. It’s the only way out—and no one’s ever made it through alive.

I actually just also realized this is a series so that is another gift idea (good thing he doesn’t read my blog!!).

So I have to give him some credit for finding this third book, but he was watching the Great American Read on PBS because I had turned it on. He was reminded he wanted to read this book. So I procured it for him and he is now reading it and loving it. In fact we stayed home the other day from a potentially fun outing because he wanted to read!!!!

 Dune

This book is billed as “the grandest epic of science fiction.” Of the three this is the one I am most interested to read myself.

There are all kinds of readers, and we aren’t all drawn to the same books. When I think about the books on my own winter reading list I admit not one of them would interest my own husband. But these three books helped get him back into reading although he says his new reading glasses also have helped Ha!!

So to my readers who like these types of books, what else would you recommend to him??
