I added The Lightest Object in the Universe: A Novel to my fall reading list because I liked the idea of a apocalyptic novel with hope.
A debut novel by Kimi Eiselle, it tells the story of two people who were beginning to fall in love when the $hit hits the fan. The power grid in the United States is down, and they can’t communicate (or do most anything the same way they used to). So one starts walking across the country to find the other.
I liked this book! First of all I have to admit I am a worrier and a mild prepper; I can totally believe the U.S. power grid could be hacked (or whatever) and that it is possible that all of us who live so “conveniently” today could have to live without electricity. Most people would not last too long given the implications of such an event.
This is a love story, and it was well written, but I primarily enjoyed the “setting” and the landscape as one crosses the country, including the humanity, good and bad, that he meets along the way. I love a good journey!
I enjoyed picking up some tips as well. For example, travel the railroad tracks not the highways. Also having bikes and knowing how to fix them will be invaluable. The communities formed in this book and their ingenuity, even how letters are passed through bicyclists across the country was inspiring. I can only hope it would be like this if the $hit really did hit the fan!
