Like many of you, I use literature for an escape but I only recently realized it can be comforting to “escape” to somewhere more terrifying that my/our current situation of COVID and politics.
Thrillers aren’t my primary genre but I do read them regularly including this recent favorite, and I have enjoyed Ruth Ware’s books before so decided to add this one to the top of my fall reading list.
One by One by Ruth Ware
There’s lots I liked about this book. First, the premise of a corporate retreat in the French Alps was interesting for the social and professional drama. Also, there is an element of social media with the company being “Snoop,” an app for listing to the music that others are currently listening to. The setting was beautiful (in my mind), intriguing, and scary because the weather is poor and there is an avalanche that leads to loss of power and contact with the outside world. Especially if you are a skier and/or have been to this area you would especially enjoy the descriptions of the area and ski runs.
The chapters go back and forth between two perspectives, Erin (who works at the chalet as a host) and Liz (who is joining the retreat as a former employee and minor shareholder. As people start to go missing and get killed “one by one,” their two perspectives lead us to the truth of what is happening. I truly appreciated this escape the past couple of days!
