I haven’t posted much lately because, sadly, I haven’t read anything I wanted to recommend. UGH! On my Goodreads you’ll see more more “2 star reviews” than usual. And I’ve had a hard time committing to finishing longer, potentially epic reads while the shorter books have left me skimming the endings. But, I still have all of these new fall releases on my to-read list, so hopefully there will be something good here (descriptions from publishers notes).
You can click the titles or images to view and purchase on Amazon though I fully support your purchasing at your local bookseller!
The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois: by Honoree Fanonne Jeffers
This is what I’m reading now…
The 2020 National Book Award–nominated poet makes her fiction debut with this magisterial epic—an intimate yet sweeping novel with all the luminescence and force of Homegoing; Sing, Unburied, Sing; and The Water Dancer—that chronicles the journey of one American family, from the centuries of the colonial slave trade through the Civil War to our own tumultuous era.
My Monticello – Fiction by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson
Set in the near future, the eponymous novella, “My Monticello,” tells of a diverse group of Charlottesville neighbors fleeing violent white supremacists. Led by Da’Naisha, a young Black descendant of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, they seek refuge in Jefferson’s historic plantation home in a desperate attempt to outlive the long-foretold racial and environmental unravelling within the nation.
The Duchess by Wendy Holden
The second novel in Wendy Holden’s trilogy about royal outsiders, fictionalizes the unknown London life of Wallis Simpson.
A Spindle Splintered (Fractured Fables) by Alex E. Harrow
This is a new version of Sleeping Beauty!
The Lincoln Highway: A Novel by Amor Towles
The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America.
Why I already went out and bought this one: Previous post on one of my favorite books by Amor Towles.
Beautiful World, Where Are You: A Novel by Sally Rooney
Wish You Were Here: A Novel by Jodi Picoult
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author comes a deeply moving novel about the resilience of the human spirit in a moment of crisis.
And it’s about a virus…
Harlem Shuffle: A Novel by Colson Whitehead
Harlem Shuffle’s ingenious story plays out in a beautifully recreated New York City of the early 1960s. It’s a family saga masquerading as a crime novel, a hilarious morality play, a social novel about race and power, and ultimately a love letter to Harlem.
Memphis: A Novel by Tara M. Stringfellow
A spellbinding debut novel tracing three generations of a Southern Black family and one daughter’s discovery that she has the power to change her family’s legacy.
Cloud Cuckoo Land: A Novel by Anthony Doerr
Another new book by an author of one of my favorite books.
This is one I’m currently reading but I’m multibooking it.
Have you read any of these? What are the best books you’ve read this fall?
