BOOKS SET IN LIBRARIES

I love my local library and use it to borrow many the books I read and write about on this blog. Just recently I borrowed a book about a library from my library:

The Lions of Fifth Avenue: A Novel by Fiona Davis

The title refers to the lion statues outside the New York Public Library. Not being familiar with New York City, I didn’t even realize the setting when I put this book on my late summer reading list but added it because I have previously enjoyed Fiona Davis books.

BOOKS INSPIRED BY HEMINGWAY AND HIS WIVES

I just finished a really good book about Hemingway in Key West from the perspective of a fictional maid/girlfriend while he was married to Pauline:

Hemingway’s Girl by Erika Robuck

The story also covered the 1935 hurricane that I learned about recently in another book.

I love the setting of Key West and the other places Hemingway lived, Cuba, Paris, etc., and with his four wives, there is plenty of drama to inspire historical fiction. I LOVED the Paula McLain books, one is about Hadley and the other about Martha, and I got to wondering if I have missed any other good books based on these lives.

So, I put together this list of historical fiction inspired by Hemingway and his wives, some of these I have read and some I am putting on my list now.

NEW BOOKS TO READ WHILE SHELTERING IN PLACE

Many times during the last few days I have thought to myself, “At least I like to read!”

I’m happy to share my spring reading list in case you need something new to read while we are quarantined and/or sheltering in place, with all of our usual activities and events cancelled.

All these books are new releases this spring, and they have been recommended to me by librarians around the country when I asked for new books that keep the pages turning plus provide some emotional value. Even in these trying times, I do not want fluffy reads. I want to read books that I will think back to over my life because they have added something to it.

Best wishes to you and your families as we all try to stay healthy and ride this out. And remember, at least you like to read!

NEW BOOKS TO READ IN EARLY 2020

Usually I don’t publish a reading list until “Spring” but I had to put this together NOW because SO MANY intriguing books are being released early in the year.

Here they are, new titles for early 2020 that I’ll be reading. Publishers notes in boxes and click on the title or picture to take you to Amazon. I hope you see something interesting you will read along with me!

American Dirt: A Novel by Jeanine Cummins

Already being hailed as “a Grapes of Wrath for our times” and “a new American classic,” Jeanine Cummins’s American Dirt is a rare exploration into the inner hearts of people willing to sacrifice everything for a glimmer of hope.

The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik Larson

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Devil in the White City and Dead Wake delivers a fresh and compelling portrait of Winston Churchill and London during the Blitz.

Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown by Anne Glenconner

An extraordinary memoir of drama, tragedy, and royal secrets by Anne Glenconner–a close member of the royal circle and lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret. As seen on Netflix’s The Crown.

NEW BOOKS TO READ THIS FALL & WINTER

It’s already November and I hate to say it but I’ve not been super excited about too many of the books I’ve read thus far in 2019. I think (hope) I’m yet to find my favorite book(s) of the year. Maybe it will be on this fall and winter reading list below, which includes sequels and more fantastical than usual (for me). Although I gravitated towards all the tantalizing new fiction, I did include a memoir and some non-fiction about an insect!

SUMMER READING LIST

I’ve been compiling my summer reading list for some time on my goodreads page but am just now presenting it officially.

For my seasonal reading lists I pick books that look interesting, enjoyable, and will hopefully add something to my life even if it’s just insight into a particular time and place of history. So if you are looking for mindless beach reads you will want to find a different list though I can recommend this book. I do hope you will find a book or more that interest you on this list and will read along with me this summer. Be sure to follow my blog; I will post more on these books as I read through my list (no spoilers).

Publishers notes are in block quotes. You can click on the titles or book covers to find out more and/or to purchase on Amazon.

NEW BOOKS TO READ THIS WINTER!

Twice a year I peruse the descriptions and publishers’ notes for new releases to find the books I’m most excited to read. If you have stumbled across my website, I hope we have some of the same tastes in books, and you will also find something in this list to read this winter.

While putting together this list, I realized I am becoming extremely particular about what I want to spend my time reading….when I finish a book I love, I want to pick up a book I’m going to love just as much; I don’t have time (who does??) to read bad books or books that are just not for me. So all of these books below offered me that hope.

Publishers notes are in block quotes. You can click on the titles or images to purchase from Amazon or just find out more before purchasing from your local bookseller or borrowing from your local library. (Even though I am obviously an Amazon affiliate I also support both these institutions).

I will update this post with new links as I read through this list like I did for my summer reading list. Or go straight to my favorite books of the summer.

Happy winter reading and please let me know which ones interest you and if you end up loving any of these books!
